Dubai (5)

As promised, here is the „other“ side of Dubai... Emirates, ex-pats and tourists in Dubai love - no, they adore - shopping and it shows in the umpteen shopping malls that are around here... especially on a Friday night...

Dubai Mall is (just next to Burj Khalifa) arguably the biggest and most prestigious, housing the most glitzy brands from all over the world: Dior, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Tom Ford, Gucci... you name it... all have quite ostentatious shops in the malls in Dubai... And shopping is a major pastime in Dubai...

So far so good... nothing wrong with that in my opinion... A bit shallow but it is up to individuals how they want to spend their time...

And in general, I think that the capitalist system is still the most suitable system for the way the human psyche works as it is at least honest in catering to the egotistical human nature... even if it is often cruel and unjust... especially if you don‘t have to work for your wealth...

But it strikes me difficult to reconcile the double standards and hypocrisy in all of that... look at the last image which is my favourite so far and for me pretty telling... a man in very traditional garb, who requires his wife to fully cover up herself in public (even her hands are in gloves, which I have seen very rarely here)... and yet they go shopping and come out of a flashy Tom Ford shop... Tom Ford who is a flamboyant, good-looking, openly homosexual fashion designer and film maker, living in hedonistic Los Angeles, no stranger to alcohol and parties... how does that fit together? I am at a loss to explain...
